Can I import a 300ZX ?
Yes, the 300ZX is eligible for import under SEVS (the new import scheme) but there are certain year and model restrictions to be aware of when selecting a vehicle from Japan.
Please note that thanks to the changes to the "15 Year Rule" by DOTARS on 12th May 2005, this import method is no longer an option for importing the 300ZX.
The following 300ZX's are techincally eligble for import under the SEVS regulations:
Z32 2-seater non turbo (1989 to 2000 models)
CZ32 2-seater twin turbo (1989 to 2000 models)
GZ32 2+2 non turbo (Oct 1996 to 2000 models only)
GCZ32 2+2 twin turbo (Oct 1996 to 2000 models only)
HZ32 2-seater convertible (1992 onwards)
However, there are further restrictions to consider. In 1999 a more stringent emissions regulation was introduced for Australia and it is very difficult for the 300ZX engine to meet this standard. Therefore compliance is not possible for 300ZX's past December 1998.
In addition, the crash safety standard that was introduced in 1998 requires vehicles to either have dual airbags OR to be crash tested to pass specified criteria. Nissan has done this testing already but they will not supply the test information to allow SEVS import. As this testing is very expensive to conduct independently, it is likely that SEVS compliance will remain limited to December 1997 as the latest year of 300ZX available to Australia.
Now, as the 2+2 is only really available from August 1996 to December 1997 (and it is classified as a different vehicle to the 2-seater since it has a different chassis and therefore requires a completely new SEVS application), it does not present a financially viable proposition for compliance workshops to pursue at this stage.
So this effectively limits SEVS import of the 300ZX to the 2-seaters below:
Z32 2-seater non turbo (1989 to December 1997 models)
CZ32 2-seater twin turbo (1989 to December 1997 models)
HZ32 2-seater convertible (1992 to December 1997 models)
Note also that to further complicate matters, side intrusion bars were only factory fitted from late 1992 in the 300ZX, and the only way to pass compliance on the earlier models at this stage is to fit doors with factory intrusion bars from a later model.
We can of course source a suitable 300ZX to order for you from Japan within the required year and model range, and there are some very nice examples still to be found in Japan. Please ask sales@prestigemotorsport.com.au for a FREE 7-day trial of our Auction Search System which will show you what is available in Japan in a typical week at auction, and the sale prices.
You can even check out the 300ZX's that are being auctioned in Japan today online at Japanese Auctions
